LEGO Train Motors & Power Kits – Motorize Your LEGO Railway

4.5V (battery, 1966–1980s). The earliest motorized trains, driven by a simple onboard battery car with basic forward control. Collector interest only today.

12V (1969–1991). Power was delivered through a conductive middle rail, allowing remote control of signals, decouplers, and points from a central controller. Sophisticated for its era, but long discontinued.

9V (1991–2006). Current ran through metal-topped rails, and the motor picked it up directly from the track — no onboard battery required. Prized by enthusiasts for its plug-and-play reliability and consistent speed.

RC Train (2006–2009). A short-lived transitional system that moved power onboard and introduced remote operation, bridging the gap between rail-powered and the Power Functions era.

Power Functions / PF (2007–2020). Power moved fully onboard via a 9V battery box, and control was handled by an infrared receiver and handheld remote across four channels. Because IR is line-of-sight with a range of roughly 3–4 meters, the receiver has to be positioned where the remote can "see" it. PF was designed to work across themes — the same motors, lights, and receivers appear in Technic and Creator sets.

Powered Up / PU (2018–present). LEGO's current standard. PU replaces the IR receiver with a rechargeable Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) hub, controlled by a dedicated PU remote or the official app. Bluetooth removes the line-of-sight limitation, extends range, adds channels, and enables app features like custom speed curves and multi-train control. The trade-off is that the hub was originally engineered around Technic models, so fitting it neatly into a slim locomotive body takes more planning than a compact PF battery box.
